Inspired by a Space Oddity

Everyone once in a while, an opportunity comes your way that has the potential of changing the course of your life.

Recently, one such opportunity brought us to the SOAR conference in Ottawa, and later to shake the hand of the first Canadian to walk in space, and to command the international space station.

Chris Hadfield

Chris Hadfield is probably best known for his unforgettable rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” in zero gravity, however, the true value of this man certainly lies in the decades of intense training, service and dedication to his passion.

The accolades that come with being one of the most famous Canadian astronauts are certainly admirable, but listening to Chris speak about his journey from a young boy playing astronaut in a cardboard box, to taking the lead in the face of the danger that arises in space, it was truly his strength of character and determination that to us, made him shine.

Every face in the auditorium was transfixed by his stories of holding on through years that were not particularly successful, of relentlessly pursuing his goals and of defining moments of sheer luck. Pursuing the advancement of the human race is no easy task, but looking into the eyes of a man who had seemingly achieved the impossible, as he recalls the Aurora Borealis rushing between his legs like water while he was on a space walk really has a way of calling forth something inside of yourself that yearns to pursue something greater.

When all was said and done, we felt so inspired by Chris’ story, and presenting him with a gift from our community was a deeply treasurable moment. Although the experience only lasted one night, the effect on us will last much longer, feeling so empowered and encouraged to continue on our mission to unify the people of the world.

He has reinforced to us the power of human beings, of determination and of supporting one another, and for us, reflecting on this whole experience the question really becomes,

“What can we achieve in this world?” And the answer, resoundingly, is

“Together, anything.”
